Heavy Truck Mechanic

Job Purpose

Responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy trucks, trailers, and related heavy-duty vehicles to ensure they are safe, reliable, and available for operation.

Key Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance on heavy trucks and trailers.
Inspect vehicles to identify mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic faults.
Diagnose engine, transmission, differential, braking, steering, suspension, and cooling system problems.
Repair and replace defective components, including:
Diesel engines and fuel systems
Gearboxes and clutches
Differential and driveline systems
Brake systems
Steering and suspension systems
Cooling and exhaust systems
Hydraulic systems

Perform engine oil, filters, coolant, belts, hoses, and other scheduled service replacements.
Conduct troubleshooting using appropriate diagnostic tools and equipment.
Carry out major repairs and component replacement according to manufacturer specifications.
Inspect vehicles after repair and conduct functional tests to confirm that the equipment is safe and ready for service.
Report major defects and recommend additional repairs when required.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, including work performed, parts used, and vehicle condition.
Coordinate with the Workshop Supervisor regarding repair priorities, parts requirements, and vehicle availability.
Ensure tools, equipment, and work areas are maintained in safe and good working condition.
Follow company safety procedures, workshop rules, and applicable vehicle inspection requirements.
Support MVPI preparation and inspection requirements where applicable.
Assist other workshop mechanics and technicians with troubleshooting and major repair activities when required.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Technical diploma or vocational qualification in Automotive/Heavy Vehicle Mechanics or a related field.
Proven experience working on heavy trucks, trailers, buses, or heavy equipment.
Good knowledge of diesel engines and heavy-duty vehicle systems.
Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical faults.
Experience using mechanical tools, diagnostic equipment, lifting equipment, and workshop machinery.
Ability to read service manuals, technical drawings, and maintenance instructions.
Valid driving license for vehicles is an advantage.
